Scholarships at Hunter Hall
Hunter Hall believes that talent should be nurtured. Our scholars embody the School Values and excel academically or in their chosen field of performing arts or sport. They are pupils who recognise that being a scholar carries certain responsibilities, including setting an example to other pupils. Scholarships are made with a commitment from the school to develop and extend the award holder’s talents by providing expert teaching within a supportive culture that challenges each child to expect more of themselves.
How many scholarships can be applied for?
Candidates can apply for more than one scholarship and each scholarship is awarded as a result of strictly-moderated open competition and assessment.
What do we expect from our applicants?
We expect scholars to set themselves high standards in the way they apply themselves and the way in which they conduct themselves around the school. We hope that they will both enjoy and make the most of being a scholar.
The School reserves the right to withdraw awards if at any point, in the opinion of the Head, and after monitoring procedures, the pupil is performing significantly below expectations, or in cases of serious misconduct.
How are pupils assessed?
In addition to the general entry requirements (please refer to our Admissions Policy), any specific additional entry requirements can be found in the relevant scholarship page.
Candidates will be required to sit either a written examination or practical assessment, and in some cases both, before being invited for an interview with a senior member of staff.
Candidates should wear their current school uniform unless otherwise informed.
Academic Scholarships
Pupils will strive in all academic subjects and can expect to be set work that they will find both challenging and stimulating.
How are pupils assessed?
Candidates sit age-appropriate assessments, suitable for state and independently educated applicants, and attend an interview with the Head. The assessments are designed to establish academic potential and past papers are not available.
Performing Arts Scholarships
Pupils will make a significant contribution to school events, such as concerts and productions. They will receive individual support to enable them to make accelerated progress in music or drama, or both.
How are pupils assessed?
There will be an interview for all candidates with the Head as well as the Director of Music and/or Director of Drama. In terms of performance, candidates can choose between the following three options:

Performing Arts: Combined
- Perform one monologue of your choice lasting no more than two minutes.
- Perform one song or piece of music of your own choice lasting no more than three minutes.

Performing Arts: Drama
- Perform one monologue of your choice lasting no more than two minutes.
- Perform a second monologue provided in advance by the School.

Performing Arts: Music
- Perform one song or piece of music of your own choice lasting no more than three minutes.
- Perform a second contrasting song or instrumental piece.
Sports Scholarships
Scholars will be fully involved in the Sports Department playing in a variety of sports teams, and participating in the many extra-curricular sports activities on offer.
How are pupils assessed?
The assessment day will include an interview with the Director of Sport and the Head during which candidates may like to talk about their sporting achievements. Written testimonials from third parties (clubs, coaches etc.) will be taken into consideration.

Expectations
Sports scholarships are given on purely sporting grounds to pupils who demonstrate potential. Candidates are expected to:
- Demonstrate talent in at least one of the major team sports
- Display excellent individual agility and co-ordination for their age group
- Possess interest, determination and show the capacity to improve through practice or skilled teaching

What we look for
- Candidates can nominate one or more major sport(s) in which they feel they are particularly proficient; however, candidates will be expected to show all round ability in other areas such as hand-to-eye co-ordination, balance and teamwork

Which sports?
- Sports covered may include cricket, football, hockey, netball and rugby, but it is not necessary for candidates to have experience in any of these sports as the assessments are based on potential.
- If your child would like to be assessed for tennis, athletics and/or swimming in addition to those sports already listed, please indicate this on your application.
